Dear friends from U.S. and Chinese Universities, Ladies and Gentlemen,

各位在场美中两国教育界的朋友们，大家好。

Welcome to Wuhan and a hearty welcome to all of you who came all the way from the U.S., Changsha, Hunan, Yichang, Hubei and here in Wuhan.  I am delighted to join you in today’s unique educational forum that enables 12 U.S. and 11 Chinese universities in Central China to get together to network and build collaborative relations.

欢迎大家远道而来参加今天这个国际教育交流座谈会。12个美国高等学府与11个中国高等学府的领导们能在武汉相聚一堂，共同研讨如何加强合作， 那不是偶然的，而是缘分！

As the first U.S. Consul General in Wuhan, I am honored to welcome all of you on behalf of the new U.S. Consulate General, the first new U.S. diplomatic post in China in more than 20 years.  Central China has always been the cradle of Chinese civilization, the reservoir of ancient Chinese culture and a major center of Chinese higher education.  A U.S. presence in Wuhan allows the U.S. government to provide services to American and Chinese institutions of higher education, to help promote mutual understanding, facilitate exchange programs and build enduring university linkages.

作为第一任美国驻武汉总领事，我很荣幸代表美国驻武汉总领馆欢迎大家。中国中部地区是中国文化与文明的发源地，也是中国高等教育的主要中心之一。 武汉总领馆是最近20多年来美国在中国成立的最新领馆， 目的之一在于为美中两国高等学府提供协助，促进交流，建立长久校际关系。

In today’s international system, the world has become smaller, and individuals are more likely to have a direct impact.  Today, every American studying abroad is an ambassador for our nation.  Similarly, every foreign student attending a U.S. university brings a  different perspective to American classrooms.  We need universities to open their doors to people from around the world.  We need universities to send their students around the world.  Through that exchange and contact, we can learn more about each other.  在当今这个越来越小的国际社会里，个人的影响力不可限量。每个在外国留学的美国学生都是美国的亲善大使。而在美国留学的外国学生也一样，把不同的看法带进美国课堂里。我们需要大学向国外敞开大门， 我们也需要大学把学生送出国门。唯有交流，才能增进理解。

I am a firm believer in international education and have personally benefited from it when I spent four years in the University of Wisconsin’s Madison Campus over 30 years ago as a foreign student from Tamkang University in Taiwan.   With what I have learned in the U.S., I returned to China to work as a U.S. diplomat three times to push hard for international education.  What a small world and what a joyful outcome. 

我对国际教育交流的重要性深信不疑。三十多年前我受益无穷，从台湾的淡江大学到美国威斯康辛大学麦迪逊校 区进修四年。多年后，带着学习的心得，我以美国外交官的身份三次回到中国为国际教育交流而努力。多么圆满，愉快。

Secretary Rice once said one of her highest priorities is to connect America to the people of the world through education.   I am more than happy to follow her advice.   Again, Welcome!    美国国务卿莱斯曾经说过通过教育使美国与世界结合是她的当急之务。作为国务院的官员，我自然是当仁不让。再一次欢迎大家。
